Early Morning Fire on Hwy 106

Early morning on July 13, 2010 Mason County Fire District 2 responded to a house fire at the 12000 block of Highway 106 in Belfair, Wa.  Additional resources from Mason County Fire District 3, 5, 6, and 11 along with South Kitsap Fire and Rescue were called to assist in putting this fire out.  Firefighters totaling over 30 were used for more than two hours to contain this fire to the basement level.  Occupants report that they were upstairs at the time of the fire watching TV when the homes inter-connected smoke detectors alerted them to the fire downstairs.  One of the occupants went downstairs and opened the door to find heavy smoke, he them closed the door and evacuated the home.  911 was contacted at 1204am with fire crews arriving shortly after.

Mason County Fire Marshals Office with assistance from Fire District 2 investigators have arrived on scene and will work through the next couple of days on the determination of origin and cause.  The two occupants have received assistance from the local Red Cross chapter and will be staying locally.

This fire is another great example of why all homes should have operational smoke detectors.  They truly save lives.  Mason County Fire District 2 would like to remind their residents that free smoke detectors can be obtained from any of our staffed stations or by calling 360-275-6711.
