Obtaining a Burn Permit

In Mason County all outdoor burning that is larger than 4 feet in diameter must be issued a burn permit prior to burning.  Burn permits are only issued in areas that lie outside of the Urban Growth Areas as established by the Planning Departments.  All burn permits are issued by the Mason County Fire Warden’s office.  The Warden’s office is located at   411 N. 5th St in Shelton. The Warden’s office can also be contacted by phone at 360-275-4467 ext 459. Burn permits can also be obtained every Thursday at the Mason County Permit Center's extension office located in the  Belfair Chamber of Commerce building at 23910 NE State Route 3 in Belfair  from 9am to 4pm.  
Prior to being issued a permit the following steps should be followed:

 
Step 1:  Have your burn site ready to be inspected

  • No burn pile can be larger than 20 feet in diameter
  • All burn piles must be located no less than 100 feet from any structure
  • All burn piles must also be located no less than 50 feet from any standing timber or areas of vegetation

 Step 2: Payment for Permit must be made

  • Prior to being issued a permit a $100 fee must be paid to the Fire Warden’s office in Shelton.  Fee’s must be paid by check and will be accepted only at the Warden’s office located at 411 N. 5th St in Shelton. Fee’s for permits WILL NOT be accepted at the burn site.

Step 3: Schedule an Appointment For Inspection

  • Following payment of the permit fee an appointment will be made by the Fire Warden’s office to have your burn site inspected.

 Step 4: Permit Is Issued

After a permit has been issued please follow the regulations listed below for safe burning

The burn permit must be on the burn site during all burning activity 

  •        Only natural vegetation can be burned 
  •         All materials MUST originate from the property being cleared.  Hauled in debris cannot be burned. 
  •         No fire is to be commenced before dawn and no materials may be added to the fire after dusk 
  •    A minimum of one person with equipment capable of extinguishing the fire must be present at the site for all burning activity.

Fire District 2 can not issue burning permits.
